2022 has seen the release of “Bad Habit” by Steve Lacy. Since then, it has become a big hit. In the US, it peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100. Additionally, in the UK, it peaked at number 9. The song features some great jazz chords on guitar. For this reason, it is worth learning for any guitarist interested in jazz, soul or RnB style guitar playing. Therefore, in this guitar lesson, we will look at how to play “Bad Habit” by Steve Lacy. Firstly, we will look at the chords. Secondly, we will study the “Bad Habit” guitar tab for this song.
“Bad Habit” – Steve Lacy – Chords
As mentioned above, there are some really nice chords here. However, they may pose a challenge to some guitar players. In particular, the Dbmaj7 chord is quite the stretch to begin with. Notably, this is actually how Steve Lacy frets this chord. In the event that this chord is too challenging, then an alternative has been suggested on the chord sheet below:
Practice fretting each chord slowly at first. Furthermore, watch out for the muted strings in each shape. Notably, the Abmaj7 and Bbm11 chords require you to mute both the A and high E strings.
After you have learnt the chords, begin looking at the tab below.
“Bad Habit” Guitar Tab
Here is the “Bad Habit” guitar tab. Although this song is 86 BPM, there are some quick chord changes. To clarify, these occur on beat 4 of every bar. As you can see, this will require practice. In the event that you are unfamiliar with these chord types, this will pose a challenge at first.
