If 2026 is the year you’ve finally decided to learn guitar, you’re in the right place.
Most beginners feel overwhelmed because they jump in without a clear plan. They watch random YouTube videos, try to learn songs that are too hard, and quickly get frustrated. That’s exactly why I created this simple, proven 7-step system.
In the video below, I walk you through the exact roadmap I use with every complete beginner — whether they’re learning in Colchester, online via Zoom, or anywhere in the world. It’s designed to build strong foundations, keep you motivated, and get you playing real music fast.
Why a Structured Approach Works So Well in 2026
Guitar learning has never been easier thanks to online lessons, great free resources, and flexible options (in-person, Zoom, or hybrid). But the biggest factor in your success isn’t what you learn — it’s the order you learn it.
This 7-step roadmap removes the guesswork so you can:
- Avoid bad habits that slow you down later
- Play real songs within your first few weeks
- Stay motivated because you see consistent progress
- Build skills in the right order (technique → chords → rhythm → songs)
Here’s the complete system:
Step 1: Get Some Lessons
The fastest and most enjoyable way to learn is with proper guidance. Whether that’s weekly in-person lessons, online Zoom sessions, or a mix of both, structured teaching saves you months of frustration.
Pro tip: Start with a free introductory call so you can see if the teaching style fits you.
Step 2: Basic Techniques
Before you worry about chords or songs, master the fundamentals:
- How to hold the guitar comfortably
- Good posture and hand position
- Fretting technique (thumb placement is crucial)
- Basic picking/strumming motion
Getting these right early makes everything else much easier.
Step 3: Simple Tunes
One of the best ways to stay motivated is to play music as soon as possible. We start with easy one-string melodies and simple tunes like:
- “Seven Nation Army”
- “Shape of You”
- “Hold Back the River”
These build your ear, timing, and confidence quickly.
Step 4: 2-Finger Chords
Instead of jumping straight into full open chords, we use easy 2-finger versions first (Em, partial D, Cmaj7, G6, etc.). These let you play real songs almost immediately and train your fingers without overwhelming them.
Great for songs like “Zombie” and many others.
Step 5: The First 9 Chords
Once your fingers are ready, we move on to the essential first 9 chords every beginner should know:
A, Am, C, D, Dm, E, Em, F, G
These 9 chords unlock thousands of songs. I have a dedicated micro course and blog post that goes deep into each one.

Step 6: Strumming Patterns
Rhythm is what makes you sound like a real guitarist. We start simple (steady downstrokes) and gradually add upstrokes and common patterns that work across hundreds of songs.
Step 7: Moving on to a Custom Plan
Once you have the foundations, we create a personalised plan based on:
- The songs you actually want to play
- Your available practice time
- Your musical goals (acoustic, electric, singing while playing, etc.)
This is where the real fun begins — you start learning the music you love while continuing to improve your technique.
